Appreciation Day scheduled for Aug. 13
President Lois B. DeFleur invites all faculty and staff to attend Appreciation Day from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, in front of the Library Tower in recognition and celebration of the contributions of all faculty and staff, particularly during these challenging times.
This year’s event will be much simpler because of budget circumstances.
A luncheon will be provided by Sodexo and once again, Binghamton’s own Dave Simek will serve as disc jockey. Supervisors are asked to adjust employee schedules so that all clerical and support staff may attend for at least one hour.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the Appalachian Collegiate Center, Mountainview College.

University Fest to take place Aug. 29
The 16th annual University Fest will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.
The event welcomes visitors and the campus community to the University to celebrate the beginning of the academic year.
The festival, held on the Peace Quad, will include carnival rides, vendor booths, a children’s play area, food, student organization tables and live music. A free book giveaway will also be part of the festivities.
University Fest is sponsored by the Binghamton University President’s Office, the Office of Campus Life, Sodexho Campus Services and Visions Federal Credit Union.
‘Discover Binghamton’ video is now online
“Discover Binghamton — The Premier Public University,” a video highlighting academics, research, sustainability and student life at Binghamton University is now available online.
The video can be viewed by visiting http://youtube.com/BinghamtonUniversity.
The video showcases Binghamton’s achievements as a world-class institution that combines a broadly interdisciplinary, international education with one of the most vibrant research programs in the nation.
“This video enabled us with the ability to tell Binghamton’s story in a very compelling and visual way while capturing the spirit of achievement at Binghamton,” said Greg Delviscio, interim associate vice president for Communications and Marketing. “We were also fortunate to find students, faculty and staff who were able to assist with the production from start to finish.”
University to take part in United Way Day of Caring
Binghamton University will participate in the annual Day of Caring on Friday, Sept. 11. Volunteers from area businesses and other organizations will work on projects at local non-profit agencies, including both members and non-members of United Way.
The annual Day of Caring combines service, volunteerism and community spirit. It is held to commemorate events of Sept. 11, 2001, to honor the spirit of serving others and building our community together. Last year about 120 Binghamton University staff and faculty worked to improve facilities and programs in various community locations.
Employees who wish to participate may do so without charging leave credits. Make appropriate arrangements with supervisors. Lists of available activities and forms are available from Mary Beth Willis, email@example.com.
Alumni Association offers ‘A Day at the Races’
The Alumni Association will host “A Day at the Races” in Saratoga, on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Two options are available: The $35 option covers the bus ride to and from, entry to the track, barbeque buffet at the Paddock Tent and access to the clubhouse. The $20 option includes all of the above without the charter bus.
Buses will leave from the East Gym parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and will return after the last race at about 9:30 p.m. Seats are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve your spot, go to http://www.bconnectalumni.binghamton.edu and click on “View Upcoming Events.” The reservation deadline is Aug. 12.

Time to request SOOT surveys for summer
It’s time for faculty to request Student Opinion of Teaching surveys for summer 2009.
To request online SOOT using Blackboard or paper SOOT survey forms go to http://blackboard.binghamton.edu/. Once there, enter your PODS username and password. From the list of Tools on the left side of the page, click on “SOOT Surveys.” Choose paper or online from the pull-down list for each course you want surveyed and hit “Request Surveys.”
Your students will use Blackboard to respond to the survey (July 24-Aug. 7). If there are any others who you have enrolled in your Blackboard course and given the role of “Instructor,” they will also have opportunity to request a SOOT survey.
Results will be available Aug. 21, or 14 days after the end of class for classes with different ending dates.

For paper survey forms: Once you have requested your forms, print the confirmation and instruction sheet for use when administering the SOOT. The forms will be delivered within three to four working days. Completed surveys must be returned to the Computing Services Help Desk. (Note: The new forms are orange.) Results will be available Aug. 21, or 14 days after the end of class for classes with different ending dates. You will need to go into Blackboard to access and print your SOOT results.
