President DeFleur seeks honorary degree nominees

President Lois B. DeFleur invites nominations of individuals to be considered for honorary degrees for the next academic year.

To begin the process on campus, submit nominations by Thursday, March 25, to your dean, or directly to President DeFleur if you are not affiliated with one of the schools.

Honorary degrees are awarded to recognize excellence and extraordinary achievement in the fields of public affairs, the sciences, humanities and the arts, scholarship and education, business and philanthropy, and social services; to honor meritorious and outstanding service to the University, the State of New York, the United States or to humanity at large; and to recognize individuals whose lives and significant achievements should serve as examples of the University’s aspirations for its students. The person’s achievements must be both relevant and appropriate to the Binghamton University campus, so nominees with a connection to the campus or a member of the University community are preferred.

To nominate someone, submit a letter of nomination describing why the nominee’s distinction or eminence in his or her field justifies the awarding of an honorary degree and stating how the nominee’s achievements are relevant to our campus. If you have detailed information about the nominee’s accomplishments (vitae or Who’s Who entry), forward this as well.

Maintain complete confidentiality regarding the nomination; the nominee especially should not know. No one already holding an honorary degree from any SUNY institution is eligible to receive another one.

Council/Foundation Award nominations due March 12

The Council/Foundation Award for service to the University is the combined award of the Binghamton Council and the Binghamton Foundation presented annually to individuals from the University community. 

Three awards are given, one each to a faculty member, a staff member and a student, to those who have served the campus with outstanding dedication and who have provided exemplary service and/or leadership to the University.  Recipients receive a $1,000 check and a certificate that will be presented at the President’s Award Luncheon on April 30 for the student, and at the Excellence Awards Dinner in the fall for faculty and staff.

Nominations should be submitted with the nomination form (found at and the following additional information: 

• A resume, curriculum vitae or job description specific to the nominee’s current position.

• A letter of nomination which speaks to the merits of the nominee (up to two typed pages).

• A minimum of three and a maximum of seven letters of support (up to two typed pages each).

All nominations should be sent electronically in either MS Word or PDF format to Laura O’Neil at The nominations will remain confidential and are due by Friday, March 12.

Children’s Dance Theatre to present annual performance

Children’s Dance Theatre will present its dance showcase at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Osterhout Concert Theatre.

The family-friendly show will feature pieces choreographed and performed by Binghamton University students in various styles of dance, including lyrical ballet, modern, tap and hip-hop.

One of the oldest dance groups at Binghamton University, Children’s Dance Theatre travels to area elementary schools to perform in school assemblies in addition to a week of performances for school children on the University campus. Schools are invited to bring their students to these weekday performances for no cost. The aim of these performances, along with the general public Saturday afternoon show, is to expose the art of dance to the children of Greater Binghamton.

Tickets are available at the door and will be $2 for children 12 and under and $5 for adults (including Binghamton University students). Also available are special advance prices for groups; contact Rhae Ann Hawkes (777-6951) for rates.

Sign up to participate in Spring 2010 Commencement

Faculty (including adjuncts) and administrators at the assistant dean level or higher are invited to sign up to participate in one of the four University Spring 2010 Commencement ceremonies to be held on Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16.

Those interested in participating should complete the Faculty Administrator Participation form no later than Friday, March 26, available on the Commencement website at
