President DeFleur wins civic leadership award

Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur was honored with the Broome County Chamber of Commerce Civic Leadership Award at its recent annual dinner. The award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the community.

A sociologist and experienced administrator, DeFleur came to Binghamton in 1990 as its fifth president. Under her leadership, the University has initiated new doctoral programs in education, nursing, management and several engineering fields and has successfully completed its first comprehensive gifts campaign.

A former chair of the board of directors of both the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the American Council on Education, she is also very involved in the community and serves on several non-profit boards including the Broome Chamber and the Greater Binghamton Coalition.

A graduate of Blackburn College in Illinois, DeFleur earned her master’s degree from Indiana University and her doctorate from the University of Illinois. Prior to coming to Binghamton, she was provost at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
