Bearcats host Northeastern in America East final
The Bearcats’ men’s soccer team will host Northeastern University in the America East Championship game at noon Saturday with a conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line.
After being picked to finish eighth in the conference in the preseason coaches’ poll, the soccer team (11-2-6) continued its remarkable season, defeating Hartford 1-0 in the America East Conference semifinal last Saturday.
Northeastern is the defending conference champion and also the only America East team to have defeated Binghamton during the regular season, after handing the Bearcats their first loss of the season (2-1) in September.
Binghamton is making its first appearance in the championship game after just two years in the conference. A victory on Saturday would clinch the Bearcat’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.
The last time Binghamton won a men’s soccer conference championship was in 1989, when it earned its sixth State University of New York Athletic Conference title.
This year has proven to be one of the most successful years for the men’s soccer program. Binghamton has broken four school records, tied a fifth school record and had several more accomplishments rank among the best in its 43-year history.
