BU to host largest local research-level mathematics conference

BU will host the 2003 Fall Eastern Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society October 11-12 in LH-1. More than 300 mathematicians from 36 states and 12 countries will gather for the event, the largest research-level mathematics conference ever held locally.

Highlights of the meeting will include lectures by members of the University's department of Mathematical Sciences. Among BU's professors speaking will be Miguel Arcones, Thomas Farrell, Peter Hilton, Dikran Karagueuzian, Marcin Mazur and Thomas Zaslavsky.

Fifteen mathematicians, who earned their PhDs at the University, will also address the conference. Invited addresses will be given by Peter Kuchment of Texas A&M University, Zlil Sela of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics, Zoltan Szabo of Princeton University and Jeb F. Willenbring of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

The AMS, founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, is a 28,000-member organization, which aims at promoting mathematical research and its uses, strengthening mathematical education, and fostering awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines in everyday life.
