Events Center receives its own ' Olympic ' track
The runners who will sprint along the new Events Center's indoor track may never realize they are running on the same surface as Olympic athletes.
The $33.1 million center, which is still under construction and scheduled to begin hosting basketball games in January, includes a track made with the same surface that will be used by the world's best athletes at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
The 200-meter competition track, which includes 60,000 square feet of rubber athletic flooring, was installed by the Liverpool-based SportsBuilders Inc. and manufactured by Mondo, the official supplier of track and field surfaces in Athens' Olympic Stadium.
"The installation of the floor by SportsBuilders took about a month from start to finish," said Anthony Ferrara, vice president for administration. "The final task was to paint lines on the track. The entire floor and track look great and the contractors are now moving ahead with seating installation."
Mondo, which entered the track manufacturing market in 1969, has created an Olympic standard and is said to have helped produce more than 200 world records.
In addition to the track, the balance of the flooring in the 156,000-sqaure-foot Events Center is Mondo's multi-runner surface, which is suitable for soccer, tennis, basketball and a wide variety of activities.
