INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY
STAR awards offered to showcase employees outstanding service
Their award, though, doesn't involve a $1 million prize. "We try to make a big deal about it," said Parker, assistant vice president for research, who along with Hall, director of human resources, are members of the University's STAR team.
"We don't tell the recipient we are coming and then we go to their office and surprise them " with the entire STAR team and their supervisor," Parker said. "We are there to celebrate and recognize exemplary service."
And that was what the award was created to do.
Now entering its fifth year, the STAR award, presented to employees for outstanding service to the University, has been given to about 50 workers since it was created to honor "excellent service quality," Hall said.
STAR stands for Service Tradition Award Recognition and was created to recognize, affirm and support examples of outstanding quality service within the campus community. Anyone can be nominated, and self-nomination is allowed and encouraged.
But since its creation, the reasons employees have received the award have varied.
Parker said some have been awarded to honor longtime, devoted workers while others were presented to recognize a significant contribution from providing a local tour to a parent and new student to custodial workers decorating a department office.
"It could just be a single act that bears recognition," Parker said.
Nominations are open to any University employee including faculty, staff, and graduate/teaching assistants. Workers from the Research Foundation, Binghamton Foundation, Sodexho Campus, Barnes & Noble, Campus Pre-school & Early Childhood Center, FineHost and M&T are also eligible.
Recipients receive $50, a mug, STAR pin and a congratulatory letter from President Lois B. DeFleur. "There are a lot of stars out there shining, who need to be brought to our attention," Hall said. "And we want to make sure they are."
