DeFleur appoints Diversity Advisory Council

In an effort to help Binghamton Uni- versity build a more inclusive com- munity, President Lois B. DeFleur has commissioned a BU Diversity Advisory Council to review University-related multicultural issues and concerns.

The council, chaired by Valerie Hampton, director of Affirmative Action, will recommend enhancements and innovations to help the University meet its broad objectives in the area of diversity.

“Binghamton University is committed to creating a campus environment in which all of its members — irrespective of racial, ethnic or religious heritage; class; gender; sexual orientation; or ability status are respected and contribute to the life of the University,” DeFleur said. “We encourage cultural groups and organizations to offer activities and events that are shared throughout the University and help us to better understand our diverse perspectives.”

The council will also review more general institutional issues and concerns, make appropriate recommendations for change and report its findings and recommendations annually. It will also serve in an advisory capacity to the Affirmative Action Office and the Multicultural Resource Center.

Hampton said the group will serve as an affirmative action committee for her office. “We need to get a global idea of what is going on at this campus,” Hampton said. “That way we can assure a quality education in a diverse and welcoming environment.”

The committee will include representatives from the Multicultural Resource Center, Educational Opportunity Program, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, External Affairs, Research, Administration, the Graduate Student Organization, the Student Association and SA Assembly, the Intercultural Awareness Committee and a community representative.

“As a community, Binghamton University students, faculty, staff and administrators all share responsibility, individually and collectively, for achieving the goals of inclusiveness,” DeFleur said. “In our multiple roles, each of us is responsible for encouraging openness among colleagues, and wherever possible, ensuring that events of all types attract and include a wide range of individuals.”
