DeFleur addresses Faculty Senate in semi-annual address

In her semi-annual address to the Binghamton University Faculty Senate, President Lois B. DeFleur earlier this week spoke of challenges the campus has faced — challenges that remain and advocacy efforts to steer the campus into the future.

“We’re planning for three Commencement ceremonies in our own Events Center,” DeFleur said. “And we’re celebrating the successes and national recognition of our students, who excel in part due to mentoring and guidance from faculty.”

Yet to serve those students, Binghamton must advocate at the state and federal levels, as well as increase its private fund-raising initiatives. “The governor has recommended a flat budget, and that’s why we are joining with the SUNY System and are working to support the chancellor’s request for an additional $50 million for SUNY,” she said.

The University also supports the governor’s proposed $1.8 billion capital plan that would fund targeted construction projects. “Almost all of the funding that would come to Binghamton would be for science and engineering projects and infrastructure,” she said.

“There would also be special project funding of $25 million for the Downtown Education Center and $21 million for the High Technology Commercialization Center to leverage partnerships in New York state.” Funding issues will continue to challenge the University, DeFleur said. “We really have had challenges, though they’re not of a different character than what is happening across the nation.

“As we move forward, we must plan for our future,” she said, adding that the University has reconvened the Strategic Planning Council and seeks comments on the drafted recommendations. A web site for comments is accessible from the provost’s page by visiting

In other business, the senate was briefed on an updated SUNY plan for assessment. Though no motion was put forward to support the proposal or not, a straw poll resulted in a vote of none in favor, 19 against and 16 abstentions.
