BU celebrates Earth Day today

President Lois B. DeFleur will sign Binghamton University’s recently adopted Environmental Policy at 11:45 a.m. today, kicking off a variety of events to celebrate Earth Day 2004.

The policy, which sets forth a broad range of environmental guidelines, was developed and approved by the Committee on University Environment and states that BU “should conduct its educational practices, research and business operations in ways that minimize negative impacts on the local and global environment.”

A variety of activities will take place at the Dickinson Amphitheater – all designed to educate and raise awareness regarding environmental issues. Events will include displays of the University’s recycling truck and a composting system.

Two environmentally friendly vehicles will be featured: a BU global electric motor car and a Honda Civic Hybrid vehicle, presented by Miller Honda in Vestal. A walk in the Nature Preserve is also planned.

Participants will have the opportunity to sample a variety of delicacies including organic food from restaurants including Down to Earth, the Moosewood and the Whole in the Wall, along with the Food Co-op and Sodexho Campus Services. Various bands will provide musical entertainment.

Events are sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department, Student Environmental Action Coalition, the New York Public Interest Research Group and the Office of Recycling and Resource Management. In the event of inclement weather, events will be held inside the University Union.
