Six BU students receive Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards
Presented to 57 student-athletes in 27 sports, the awards were instituted to recognize outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement at the Division I, III and NJCAA levels, said Edward Engelbride, assistant chancellor for student life. “This has resulted in a group of student-athletes with very impressive accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field,” Engelbride said.
The awards program, which was co-sponsored by USA Today, honored baseball senior Thomas J. Kowalchuk of Stormville; men’s golf sophomore Bradley Moulton of Orangevile, Ont.; men’s soccer sophomore Graham Munro of the United Kingdom; men’s swimming and diving junior Robert Kaczynski of Tychy, Poland; women’s swimming and diving senior Yun Qu of China; and wrestling senior Joshua Ruff of Bainbridge.
Binghamton athletes were chosen in the Division I category, which also included the University of Albany, SUNY Stony Brook and University at Buffalo. The average GPA of BU’s award recipients was 3.62 — they had seven conference championships between them.
“These six student-athletes enjoyed great success in the academic and athletic arena, and we are pleased that they are being recognized by Chancellor King in this manner,” said Joel Thirer, director of health, physical education and athletics. “I share in our collective pride regarding the diligence and hard work that each individual has shown. They are all worthy of this special honor and we congratulate them.”
