BU ranks among best in preparing future educators

By : Daniel Richards

The School of Education and Human Development had 100 percent of its students in its Education program pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examination marking yet another year Binghamton University graduates have excelled at the test.

The recent test scores again place BU among the best academic institutions in New York state in preparing future teachers.

An analysis of the passing test scores for the 2000-01 school year ranked Binghamton at the top of the list, above second-place Columbia University’s Teachers College.

C. Beth Burch, associate professor in the School of Education and Human Development, said nearly 100 percent of BU students pass the test with high scores. In fact, SEHD Dean Ernest Rose said that more often than not, those students who fail the test have not taken any education courses or have a native language other than English. It is very rare for a student enrolled in the SEHD master’s degree program to fail, he said.

“Those who come to the program already have a bachelor’s degree and our school is very selective in choosing among them, so we end up with only the best students,” Rose said.

Following graduation, Binghamton graduates tend to remain in the Greater Binghamton area, accepting jobs as new educators in its many schools. Local superintendents have shown a preference for hiring SEHD graduates because of their caliber as excellent teachers, proving that the graduates are valuable as much for their teaching skills as for their high scores on certification exams, Rose said.

“Though we are proud of our students and how well they do on the certification exams, the real value is that this reflects how well the school prepares them, both in terms of their coursework, their field work and eventually in their career as teachers,” Rose said.
