Stitching BU history together, shirt by shirt
Since last year, the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations has received approximately 150 BU T-shirts from alumni for use to form five multi-colored quilts, which will be hung throughout campus.
“We thought it was a great way to engage our alumni,” said Rose Bacmanski Frierman, senior associate director of Alumni and Parent Relations. “The alumni didn’t know what to do with them but throw them away. So instead, we told them to send them back to us.”
The idea was the brainchild of Jordan Fox ’02, a Homecoming Committee member, who proposed the idea to collect the shirts from other alumni and showcase them at the school.
Alumni donated T-shirts advertising a variety of campus organizations and events, from the radio station to theater productions to reunion weekends and athletics teams. The T-shirts were hung on clotheslines at the 2002 homecoming before stitching them together.
The quilts, with the largest measuring 90 inches by 95 inches, also have themes. Only one quilt, with an athletic theme, currently hangs in the West Gym lobby. However, Frierman said plans exist to hang the remaining four quilts at yet undetermined locations.
“This was really a success,” Frierman said. “It was one of the neatest, innovative things we have done in our office.”
