Binghamton to host upcoming America East Men’s Basketball Championship

By : John Hartrick

Ten teams and thousands of fans will converge on campus March 4-6 for the 2005 America East Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by Binghamton University at the Events Center. The conference tournament will feature eight games spread across three days, with first-round games at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 4; quarter-final games at noon, 2:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5; and semifinal games at noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6. The two semifinal winners will advance to the championship game, to be played Saturday, March 12, at a site to be determined. That title game will be televised live on ESPN.

The Bearcats have secured a top-five seed for the tournament, and will play a quarterfinal game at noon Saturday, March 5 against Albany. With two wins, Binghamton would advance to the championship and play for a spot in the NCAA Division I Championship tournament.

While Binghamton has hosted America East post-season games in other sports, including men’s soccer and golf in 2003, and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse in 2004, this is the first men’s basketball conference tournament the University has hosted since the Division III State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship in 1993. The University was selected over four other schools to host the tournament. Tickets for the event are on sale at the Events Center or by calling 777-SLAM. Fans can purchase an eight-game tour-nament pass for $45. Tickets for any of the four individual sessions — two games each — are on sale. Session prices are $18 for adults and $8 for students.
