Harpur’s Ferry team places first in national competition

A team from the Harpur’s Ferry Student Volunteer Ambulance Service placed first in the Advanced Life Support Skills Competition held during the 12th annual National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation Conference in Philadelphia, Pa.

Juniors Joshua Parsons, David Wintman and Steve Torem, and senior Benjamin Krakauer, finished with a score of 385 out of a possible 400 points. They were pitted against teams from Brown University, Saint Michael’s College, Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The team was part of a 17-person Binghamton contingent attending the national conference, which attracted more than 580 students from 73 schools.

Harpur’s Ferry provides free basic and advanced life support services to students, faculty and staff on and off campus. The organization has approximately 146 student volunteers who work anywhere between 6 and 24 hours per week during the academic year. Each volunteer is required to participate in a 72-hour advanced first aid class, as well as a 140-hour EMT course.
