‘Charismatic’ senior loves to keep busy

Emily Collins likes to have a full calendar.

Perhaps that explains why this senior from Cazenovia is doing a double major in finance and leadership and consulting in the School of Management, serving as a resident assistant in Mohawk Hall and waiting tables at TGI Friday’s.

“I need to be busy,” said Collins, the seventh of eight siblings. “I hate sitting still.”

Collins, 20, also played varsity volleyball as a freshman and sophomore and was involved in Oneida Hall government for two years.

She gave up varsity athletics to focus on academics, but she remains involved in sports. Last year, the nearly 5-foot-10-inch quarterback was named MVP of College-in-the-Woods co-rec football. She also helped launch the club softball team last spring.

Collins was an orientation adviser during the summer. She said she enjoyed learning about the University and welcoming new students to campus. She continues to get near-daily e-mails from some of them.

“You learn so much about yourself as an OA,” she said. For her, that included a new feeling of being in the minority as a white person in a very diverse group of advisers.

Collins isn’t quite sure what she wants to do after graduation, but she plans to take the Graduate Management Admission Test this fall and may go on for an MBA.

Shelley Dionne, associate professor in the School of Management, said she has no fears about Collins finding a job.

“I really think she is the BU package,” Dionne said of Collins, describing her as super-bright, charismatic and eager to learn. “She has a great, natural leadership style. Those people stand out in a group.”
