Kentucky college official named to Binghamton job

James Van Voorst, vice president for administration, has announced the appointment of Leonard V. Kogut as associate vice president for administration.

Kogut was selected from a deep pool of highly qualified candidates, Van Voorst said.

“We wanted a person who will take into account where we’ve been as we look at where we’re going,” he added. “Breadth of experience is important and Len’s background and campus activities position him well to help us move ahead with a number of initiatives.”

Kogut comes to Binghamton from the University of Kentucky, where he has served as senior associate controller with direct oversight of accounts payable, benefit financial management, financial systems and payroll.

Before that, he was controller for Western Kentucky University, where he oversaw accounting and purchasing functions, as well as payroll and tax compliance, the bursar, risk management, shipping and receiving and inventory control.

He also worked as internal auditor, business office manager and auxiliary enterprises director for Ferris State University.

“My first priority is to get to know people and see where the strengths and weaknesses are,” Kogut said. “Then, together, we&rsq

uo;ll create a team to emulate what Jim (Van Voorst) has started.”

With a broad background that includes auxiliary services, Kogut said he is excited to be joining Binghamton. “Everything that I look for seems to be here at Binghamton,” he said. “It’s an interesting area for me. I like the outdoors and community activity, so that’s what attracted me to the area. It’s a nice place to make home.”

Kogut holds a doctorate in college and university administration from Michigan State University, an MBA from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Ferris State University. A certified public accountant and certified internal auditor, he has wide university fiscal and auxiliary service as well as auditing experience at Ferris State and Western Kentucky universities and the University of Kentucky.

He is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, Kentucky Public Universities Business Officers, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Kogut begins his duties March 9.
