University responds to student’s death
Binghamton University Police received a 911 call at 10:51 p.m. Sunday reporting an injured student. Police responded with Harpur’s Ferry Ambulance Service to Mohawk Hall.
Witnesses reported that a student may have been injured as a result of a consensual boxing match between two students. The injured student, Anders Uwadinobi, 18, of the Bronx, was rushed to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Witness statements indicate that the death may have been accidental, but University Police are continuing their investigation and awaiting results of an autopsy.
The University has been assisting Uwadinobi’s parents and University counselors responded immediately and continue to work with those affected.
President Lois B. DeFleur joins with the entire University community in expressing deep sadness about Sunday night’s tragic incident.
“We have extended our sympathy to Anders’ family and friends, and the University is assisting them to meet their needs,” DeFleur said. “University officials in Student Affairs are also working with the other affected students to provide support.”
Counselors remain available for anyone affected by calling 777-2772. Binghamton University Police ask anyone with further information about the incident to call 777-2393.
