Upbeat attitude key to junior’s success

Uvarshanie Nandram’s busy schedule is no match for her cheerful, energetic nature.

This semester the junior entered her second year as a discovery assistant in Hinman College. “What I really like about being a DA is getting to know your residents,” she said. “I’m not leaving my home in Brooklyn, I’m coming home to a different family.”

Nandram was one of two student representatives who presented the results of the Discovery Program’s stress management research initiative during a spring 2007 conference at Columbia University.

The project, titled “Get in the Zone to Maximize Students’ Academic and Wellness Potential,” was implemented to determine the most stressful aspects of student life. Choosing a major and learning time management were the most significant stress points for students, which Nandram said she can identity with.

“The DA job becomes your life, essentially,” she said. “You’re a role model, you’re that ever-present person in the building, so you have to learn how to balance your time really well.”

Nandram, a finance and global management major, plans to work abroad because of her passion for meeting and working with new people. “I know that I definitely want to work on an international scope,” she said. “I love culture and I’ve developed such a passion for learning about travel.”

In 2006, she completed a summer resident adviser internship at the Columbia University dorms, where she had the chance to interact with students and staff from around the world.

“Her work ethic is exemplary,” said Scott Bennett, coordinator of discovery assistants. “Not only does she manage to stay on top of things and exceed expectations, she manages to do so with such an upbeat, positive disposition.”
