Campus to host basketball tournament
The America East women’s basketball tournament will be held Thursday-Sunday, March 8-11, at the Events Center. The Bearcats and the other eight America East teams will have one goal: to win the championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The women’s team plays its final home game of the season against New Hampshire at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, and standings for the tournament won’t be settled until the regular season wraps up. The Bearcats were 10-17 overall and 6-8 in their conference as of Feb. 24.
“We are extremely excited to host the America East Conference Tournament in 2007 and to have a chance to play for the title on our home floor,” said Rich Conover, Binghamton head coach. “Our community has given us fantastic support over the years, and we expect to have great crowds and an exciting atmosphere for the tournament.”
The women’s team lost to Hartford in last year’s America East semifinals, the best showing for the team since it joined the conference.
This is the first year the Events Center, which played host to the 2005 and 2006 America East men’s championships, will host the women’s tournament.
“We are pleased to host the America East Women’s Basketball Championship in 2007,” said Joel Thirer, Binghamton athletic director. “This event will be a great boost for our women’s team and for local attention to women’s basketball in general. We expect our program to continue to gain competitive momentum and we hope to take advantage of having the tournament on our home court. We expect to receive great support from our fans in the community as well as our fans on campus.”
The men’s tournament begins Friday, March 2, at Boston University’s Agganis Arena.
The Bearcats enter as the No. 6 seed and will play their first game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, against Boston University, the No. 3 seed.
The America East Web site at http://www.americaeast.com has more details about both tournaments.
