Pole vaulter named NCAA All-American

Senior pole vaulter Rory Quiller, 22, of West Point placed second in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9 at the University of Arkansas.

The top eight finishers in each individual event are named All-American. Quiller is Binghamton’s fourth All-American and first in track and field since the athletic department moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 2001.

His jump of 18 feet-½ inch breaks his own school record. It’s also the highest individual finish ever recorded by a Binghamton athlete at an NCAA Division I championship.

“Rory did a really good job today of handling the pressure of a big meet,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “He had a good chance to win it but considering it was only his third appearance at the NCAA meet, he was terrific.”

Quiller’s jump was at the same height as the winner’s but he had more total misses than his rival from McNeese State and thus took second place.

Last week’s performance was Quiller’s third trip to a NCAA Championship meet. As a sophomore, he advanced to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Meet (also held in Arkansas) and placed 12th overall. Last spring, he advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Meet in Sacramento, Calif., and placed 13th.
