B-Number improves information security

Full implementation of the Banner student system brings with it a change for every member of the faculty, staff and student body — the B-Number.

Whether or not individuals deal with student records, the B-Number replaces the use of Social Security numbers and is now the primary identification number for students, faculty and staff.

“The University takes seriously its responsibility to protect members of the campus community from identity theft,” said Michael McGoff, acting vice president for administration. “Safeguarding Social Security numbers is a primary way to maintain the privacy of individuals on our campus and the B-Number now allows us to do so.”

Effective this semester, do not ask anyone for his or her Social Security number, or provide it when asked for your identification number from any campus office, whether verbally or in written form. Instead, provide your B-Number.

If you forget your B-Number, you can look it up online. Using your PODS ID, log into BU BRAIN at and click on “View Your B-Number.”
