Community outreach is constant for senior
Community service was important to Nadia Bovina in high school, so it’s only natural that she has remained active at Binghamton.
Bovina, a 21-year-old finance and global management major from Brooklyn, joinedCircle K as a freshman and is now the president as a senior. Circle K is an international volunteer group that is a college version of Kiwanis or Key Club. Binghamton group members help at local soup kitchens and animal shelters on weekends and hold three key events: Locks of Love; Jamboree, which brings in children from the Boys and Girls Club in Binghamton for activities at the Events Center; and a dinner for senior citizens in the community at the Lower Hinman Dining Hall.
“It’s a nice event because it shows that we care and it’s another outreach to the community,” Bovina said of the senior dinner. “I think it’s one of our favorite events of the year because (the seniors) are so interesting.”
Working with Circle K has been rewarding for Bovina.
“When you’re doing these activities, you see that the people do enjoy it and they’re grateful you have these events set up for them,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to make people happy, meet new people and learn how to interact with people from different backgrounds. That’s helped me in college life and professionally.”
When not busy with Circle K, Bovina works as a peer adviser at Harpur Academic Advising and enjoys playing dodgeball with friends. She hopes to go into banking in the future.
Bovina has made a big impression on both faculty and staff members.
“She has a lot of pep, energy, spark and intelligence that showed in the negotiation class I taught,” said Arieh Ullmann, associate professor in the School of Management.
“She brings a lot of character to the Peer Advising program,” said Erik Colon, peer advising coordinator for Harpur Academic Advising. “Every day I see her, she has a smile on her face that illuminates the office. She is passionate at working with community organizations, very dedicated, smart and intelligent.”
