Homecoming to include milestone reunions
By : Steve Seepersaud
This year’s Alumni Reunion Weekend — scheduled for Oct. 17-19 — will have a number of special gatherings to recognize milestones and anniversaries.
Homecoming 2008 will be the last opportunity for many Newing College alumni to see Broome and Bingham halls before the East Campus redevelopment project transforms the residential community. Alumni will gather at a luncheon in Newing’s dining hall at noon on Saturday, Oct. 18. Then, at 1:30 p.m., Newing graduates will be able to tour their old halls. Their reunion culminates with a bonfire on Saturday evening, following the tailgate and men’s soccer game. Refreshments will be available at the Newing Discovery Center.
The Alumni Association and Office of Alumni and Parent Relations are organizing a Late ‘60s reunion during the weekend, looking back to the fast-paced years and friends of the Trimester experiment, during which Harpur College became known as SUNY Binghamton. Many graduates from this unique period in the University’s history identify by when they started, not when they graduated.
On Friday, Oct. 17, Susan Clark-Johnson, a Class of 1967 graduate and former president of Gannett’s newspaper division, will be the guest speaker at the Binghamton University Forum breakfast. Late ‘60s alumni will have a dinner Friday evening with emeriti faculty at Sharkey’s on Glenwood Avenue in Binghamton’s First Ward.
On Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10:30 a.m., Alumni Association Board Member Alex Huppé will lead a panel discussion titled “Harpur College: Then and Now.” Later that day, at 2 p.m., a discussion will focus on student activism and whether the spirit from the late 1960s is still alive in today’s students. Associate Professor Emeritus Eugene Vasilew will return to campus for the session.
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) will recognize its 40th anniversary with a lunch at noon Saturday in the Susquehanna Room. Graduates from other milestone class years will reunite at lunch in the University Union Food Court from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and at Tailgate ‘08.
