Campus construction updates

By : Karen Fennie

Construction season on the Binghamton University campus has been busy with a couple of major projects nearing completion, others well under way and more about to kick off or in the design stage.

East Campus Housing: Work on the new Bingham Hall is nearly complete. The five-story building will house more than 340 students this fall. Workers are finishing floor tile, ceiling paint, wall paint, data wiring and other trim. Furniture deliveries, blind installation, locks and signage will follow.

Preparations have started for the demolition of Broome, Bingham and Newing Dining Hall. The dining hall will be the last building taken down in August.

Site work has begun in preparation for the new Endicott, Delaware and Broome halls and the Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center. This includes installation of site fencing, tree removal and underground utility modifications. Lumber from the trees is being processed by Citi Logs and will provide lumber to the campus for a number of uses, including trail maintenance in the Nature Preserve and a large conference table for the Newing Lounge in the new Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center.

Foundation work will begin during the summer. Steel will start to arrive in late fall. The four additional buildings will be staged in their construction. All four will be complete for the opening of school in 2011.

University Union: The renovation of the south portion of the University Union is also nearly complete. Finishing touches are under way on flooring and ceilings. Bathroom renovations are nearly complete and final connections are being made for utilities. The refurbished space will feature a brighter Tillman lobby due to the installation of a sky light. A wall between the Mandela Room and oId Union Hall has been replaced with a moveable wall that will allow for more flexibility in use of the space. An enclosed bus waiting and several multipurpose use spaces are other features of the renovated space.

Science 5: Science 5 construction is taking place on the Plaza Deck between Science 3 and Science 4. The contractor has been removing the concrete planters and pavers to make way for the new building.  Work on establishing utilities and underground piping is also taking place. Windows in Science 3 and Science 4 have been removed as part of the project since the new building will be connected to those buildings. Steel work on the building will begin later this summer. This project is also scheduled to be complete in 2011.

Engineering and Science Building: The new Engineering and Science Building at the Innovative Technologies Complex has entered phase 2. Phase 1 work involved establishing the foundation and steel structure. Drilling for the geothermal system, one of the project’s green elements, is part of phase 2. Other work involves enclosing the building and fitting out the building interior.

Health Services: The first phase of a renovation of the Health Services building is on schedule. An area on the first floor was gutted and workers are now finishing installing new walls. New duct work is in, along with electrical and plumbing rough-ins. This first phase will be complete in August, with the entire renovation wrapping up in about a year and a half.

Lecture Hall: Improvements to the south entrance of the Lecture Hall are set to begin this summer. The Lecture Hall south entrance doors will be closed from mid-July until Aug. 20 while new walkways are poured. Building users will be directed to the doors facing the library during this time. In addition to new walkways, the project includes a sitting wall, new lighting and new landscaping. Physical Facilities anticipates that all the work will be complete by the end of November.

Other work is under way inside the Lecture Hall. Lecture Hall 9 is being upgraded with new flooring, seating, paint and teaching podium.  Lecture Hall 12 is being painted, will have a new teaching podium installed and will receive technology upgrades. Improvements have also been made to the flooring of Lecture Hall 1.
