Fernaud Braudel lecture scheduled for October 24

     The third annual Fernand Braudel Center Distinguished Lecture will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, in Casadesus Recital Hall in the Binghamton University Fine Arts building.


     Boaventura de Sousa Santos, professor of sociology at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and distinguished scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, will speak on “Beyond Abyssal Thinking: From Global Lines to Ecologies of Knowledges."


     Santos is also director of the Center for Social Studies, and director of the Center of Documentation on the Revoultion of April 25, 1974, at the University of Coimbra. He has published widely on globalization, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, democracy and human rights.


     The lecture, sponsored by the Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems, and Civilizations; the offices of the president, provost, vice president for research and dean of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Fine Arts Green Room.
