Artist returns to present Binghamton's vision of a Beloved Community

Binghamton University will present a multi-media concert, Beloved Community, hosted by flutist and producer Pamela Whitman, featuring an exhibition of photographs taken by campus and community members.  The event, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Binghamton’s West Middle School Theater located on West Middle Ave.

Whitman first visited Binghamton in February when she kicked off Beloved by inviting community members to take part in the multi-media project.  University and community participants were given cameras to document their vision of what a ‘Beautiful Community’ means to them.  The resulting photographs, which Whitman has integrated into her project, will be unveiled during the concert.

Whitman will also be joined by the Greater Binghamton Beloved Community Gospel Choir, which formed after the Beloved Kick-off event and includes singers of all backgrounds.

The events are being held to coincide with the national campaign “A Season for Nonviolence” which runs from January 30-April 4.  The 64-day international event was inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and their vision of an empowered nonviolent world.

Whitman is internationally recognized for bringing together people and cultures through her visionary style of interdisciplinary music making.  For more information about Whitman visit, www.pamelawhitman.com
