Slavery, American economic development to be focus of Romano Lecture
Gavin Wright, the William Robertson Coe Professor of American economic history at Stanford University, will deliver the Mario and Antoinette Romano Lecture at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in Casadesus Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building at Binghamton University. A reception will follow his lecture, “Slavery and American Economic Development.”
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will focus on Wright’s interpretation of the economic advantages of slavery to owners, and the reasons why slavery generated a backward economy compared to that of the free states.
Wright, a noted scholar on American economic history, is the author of numerous publications on U.S. economic performance, natural resources and economic development. His latest publications include “The Civil Rights Revolution as Economic History,” for the Journal of Economic History, and “The Role of Nationhood in the Economic Development of the USA,” for Economic Change and the Nation State in History.
Wright’s professional affiliations include the American Economic Association, the Economic History Association, the Cliometrics Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The Mario and Antoinette Romano Lecture Series was endowed in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Romano to sponsor lectures given by noted speakers in history, economics, art history and medicine.
