Winner of NYSEG Case competition announced

Winners of the fourth annual NYSEG Challenge MBA Case Competition were recently announced at a ceremony on the Binghamton University campus. Team members Keerti Parhar, Constantin Popescu, Jae Il Lee, Abbas Noman Sura and Shaun Weissman took top honors. Two teams received runner-up awards. Members of those teams were Hilmi Balkaya, Shanshan Chen, Matthew Jacob, Tung-Hsiao Yang, Cagri Yalkin, Prakash Dave, Lin Luo, Ronak Shah, Julie Stickney and Erin Yetsko.

Sponsored by NYSEG, the annual competition brings together second-year master of business administration students from the University’s School of Management for a test of their skills in the analysis and presentation of business cases.

Fifteen teams of MBA students were given the same business case to review and, after a week of preparation, participated in first-round judging on April 4. Three teams were then selected to move forward to the final round on April 11, when a panel of judges, selected from the business community, evaluated the finalists’ presentations.

Judges were Jeffrey Smith, senior vice president of corporate development for NYSEG; Stephen Van Nordstrand, executive vice president of human development at Raymond Corporation; Mary Ann Swain, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Binghamton University; Teresa E. Webb, vice president and chief financial officer at Crowley Foods, Inc.; and John Saraceno, senior vice president at BSB Bank & Trust.

In selecting the winning team, judges considered three factors: content of the presentation, delivery and communication skills, and how well the team handled follow-up questions. The winning team was awarded an $800 prize, with the runners-up receiving $350.
