Binghamton University Energy Conservation Contest winner to be announced

BINGHAMTON, NY -- Binghamton University students, faculty and staff, along with members of NYPIRG, will gather to announce the winning community of the 2009 Energy Conservation Contest at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the outdoor commons of the Hillside Community on campus.

For nine weeks, residential communities competed for a $10,000 prize by attempting to reduce energy consumption by the highest percentage.  Members of the winning community will be on hand to discuss some of the creative ways they were able to reduce energy consumption, as well as how they might spend the prize money.

This year residential communities were able to reduce energy consumption by nearly eight percent, enough energy to power fourteen homes for a year.  The reduction in CO2 emissions during the nine-week period is equivalent to removing eleven mid-size vehicles from the road for a year.

The campus community is constantly searching for ways to lower its impact on the environment by working with students to establish innovative, creative opportunities to engage and educate the residential communities in reducing energy usage.
