International
Mission Statement
In recognition that knowledge is
not confined to national boundaries
and that international and global
cooperation is an imperative of the
twenty-first century, Binghamton
University declares its commitment
to international and intercultural
education, research, and service.
Through scholarship the University
seeks to advance knowledge of a world
that has become culturally, environmentally
and economically interdependent.
It aspires to provide its members
with direct experiences of cultural
difference, and opportunities for
intellectual development that will
be valuable for professional and
civic leadership in a world community.
The University acknowledges that its community is already diverse and international
and is enhanced by the presence of visiting students and scholars from abroad.
Through its programs and services the University will enable these individuals
to contribute to our understanding of the world and the elimination of barriers
to mutual respect.
To fulfill this international mission,
the University seeks to achieve
the following specific goals:
- make possible a significant international/intercultural
dimension for every undergraduate
student's education; increase student
participation in international studies
programs;
- create a partnership between international education and intercultural education
in the recognition that the diversity within the United States teaches us as
much as does the diversity of cultures outside the United States;
- welcome international students and scholars and assist them in their integration
into the University and community;
- develop off-campus study programs intended to meet various international education
objectives: understanding of different values and political/legal systems,
experience of the requirements of a foreign educational system, immersion in
a foreign language, introduction to the culture and practice of professions
abroad, opportunity to live for a period in a community culturally different
from one's own, and participation in internships and experiential learning
in this country and abroad;
- increase the number of students who gain functional proficiency or full fluency
in a foreign language;
- promote foreign language use and advanced study and research abroad among graduate
students;
- seek ways to develop curricular programs so that international and intercultural
perspectives flourish;
- establish partnerships with universities abroad, industries, and governmental
and private agencies to provide international research, education and consultative
opportunities for students, faculty, and staff;
- share the University's international and intercultural expertise and experiences
with the local community, the region, the states, and the nation.
