Scholarships

Several scholarships are available for students participating in study abroad programs. Some are based purely on merit, while others weigh merit but are based on financial need. Scholarship application deadlines are strictly adhered to and are similar to those of study abroad application deadlines, which are usually around the middle part of the semester before the program begins. Applicants need not be admitted to programs in order to apply for scholarships, but receipt of scholarships is conditional upon acceptance into the study abroad program.

Each scholarship listed below is highly competitive. Applications should be prepared with attentiveness to the eligibility requirements and criteria for selection. Your best writing and best presentation are essential for a chance of a successful application. Plan ahead and allow your references ample time to write on behalf of you. Most scholarship programs offer several awards each cycle. Brochures and applications may be obtained in the Office of International Programs.

Binghamton University Scholarships

The Dr. Israel J. Rosefsky Language and Culture Scholarship Fund

Through the generous endowment of the late Dr. Israel J. Rosefsky, a Binghamton pediatrician, this scholarship is intended for students who will study abroad using a foreign language and who demonstrate a commitment to working toward peace. Applicants must have completed at least 45 credits at the time of application. One year of college-level language study is normally required; however, applicants who select a study abroad program in a country in whose language Binghamton does not offer formal language courses are eligible, provided the program contains a solid language instruction component. Eligibility requirements for the summer scholarships are less demanding. The award amount is $1200 for summer programs and $1800 for semester and academic-year programs.

Deadlines: March 15, for summer, fall and academic-year programs, October 15 for spring semester programs.

Marjorie B. Turnbull Spanish Language and Culture Scholarship Program

Established by William F. O'Brien in memory of Marjorie B. Turnbull, the scholarship provides Binghamton students with travel grants to foster learning of Spanish language and culture, with primary focus on Spain. Undergraduates except for freshmen are eligible with preference given to students who have completed the equivalent of SPAN 215 and SPAN 250. The scholarship provides travel grants of up to $1500 for semester study and $1000 for summer study.

Deadlines: March 15, for summer, fall and academic-year programs, October 15 for spring semester programs.

Evelio Figueroa Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship

Made possible by the many donors who have endowed the scholarship in his name, the Evelio Figueroa Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship is for undergraduate students at Binghamton University who wish to acquire a deep understanding of another culture through study abroad but do not have the financial ability to cover the cost of the experience.

Deadline: April 1, with one competition each year for fall semester and academic year programs. This scholarship program aims to support students who engage in cultural and/or foreign language immersion experiences abroad, from which they gain an in-depth knowledge of a particular country, culture, or region, an understanding of concrete global and international issues and a perspective on the connections between their destination and the United States. Recipients are expected to demonstrate their readiness to immerse themselves fully in the culture, and preferably the language of another country, and to bring back the benefits of what they have learned as a service to their community.

Weigand Scholarships

The German section of Binghamton's Department of German, Russian, & East Asian Languages offers scholarships for students working with the German language.

National Scholarships for Study Abroad
In addition to the above, the Office of International Programs has a wealth of information on program-specific and national scholarship opportunities, including, but not limited to the following. Several Binghamton students have won these prestigious awards.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
The Gilman scholarship aims to support US citizen undergraduates who traditionally have been underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students of nontraditional age. Awards of up to $5,000 are available.
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia
With the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Freeman-ASIA Award Program offers undergraduate students the means to study in Asia. The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Award Program is to increase the number of students who study in East and Southeast Asia. The Freeman-Asia Award Program is designed to support students with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study in East or Southeast Asia. Award grantees are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.
Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and relations among people of different countries and cultures. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. Recipient scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country. Upon returning home, scholars share their own personal experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.
