The Republic of Korea, known as South Korea, is a country of some 44 million people. With its own distinctive history and culture, it also represents the triumphs and challenges of East Asia's modernization, economic expansion, and contraction. Korea is an excellent vantage point from which to view the region's international cooperation, competition, and conflicts. Seoul, the capital city, provides a lively setting for summer study at Hanyang University. It is a modern, cosmopolitan city where students can visit Korea's historic palaces, museums, and temples and attend all manner of musical and theatrical performances. The variety of restaurants, cafes, shops, flea markets, sports competitions, and cultural events offers something for every individual interest. Hanyang University is located in Seoul's downtown district known as Haengdang-dong, north of the Han River. Within ten minutes walk of the campus are theaters, shops, restaurants, cafes, and night spots. The campus has its own subway conveniently located on Line 2 (green line), Seoul's most heavily used subway line, for easy access to the rest of the city. There are also multiple bus connections to make transportation around the city easy.
