Botswana Summer Study Program: Geography, Culture & Environment in Southern Africa

This program is not currently running. Please check back for updates.

If you have always wanted to visit southern Africa, now might be your chance. The Department of Geography at Binghamton University and the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Botswana have created a joint venture to enhance the international experiences of their students. Faculty from each unit in this partnership first brought a group of 13 Binghamton University students to Botswana during the inaugural summer 2012 program.

The program is open to students of all majors; as well as both under-graduate and graduate students. Urban and environmental course-work will be offered at introductory and advanced undergraduate levels, as well as graduate levels. This course-work will  be worth four credits. The coursework will expose students to many major challenges that currently face the region of southern Africa today. Students will choose one course to take as the academic course component linked to their study abroad in Botswana.

More specifically, the courses offered (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) that will be connected to the students' trip to Botswana are:
Comparing urban issues:

  •  Geog 280W/482A
  •  Geog 581A/E (Graduate only)

Or Comparing Health and Health Hazards:

  •  Geog 280Y/482E
  •  Geog 581E (Graduate only)

*Non –geography majors and students who do not have a background in urban geography or health disparities are encouraged to enroll in either Geography 280W or 280Y, which are non-major, introductory courses.
