Leipzig is a city that captures the imagination for the dramatic roles it has played in history. It is where vigils and demonstrations took place in 1989 as its citizens sought first the reform of socialism and then reunification.
Reminders of Leipzig's historical importance abound in the city's monuments. Martin Luther debated his opponents here, and Leipzig's thriving publishing industry printed each new title he produced. For 27 years Johann Sebastian Bach was the choirmaster of Thomaskirche; Felix Mendelssohn founded the symphony orchestra.
Today Leipzig is a bustling metropolis of 550,000, reclaiming its traditional stature as a trade center between East and West. Music lovers will find satisfaction in the city's concert hall, Gewandhaus, the opera or informal cafe entertainment. A sports stadium attracts major events, and many museums, parks and shopping arcades invite exploration. Travel to Berlin, other regions of Germany and destinations in Eastern Europe is easy.
