Professor Venugopalan received his PhD from Purdue University in 1973. He joined the Binghamton University Physics Department in 1981.

His interests are in spectroscopic studies of condensed matter. Over the past years, he has studied semiconductors, solid state superlattices, magnetic materials and liquid crystals. He has extensively used inelastic light scattering and fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques in order to study magnetic and vibrational excitations in these systems. The primary focus has been to correlate the evolution of these spectra with the phase transitions and underlying structural characteristics of novel materials, including magnetically diluted semiconductors. His other interests include the study of diffusion phenomena and colloidal systems using photon correlation spectroscopy.
