Atomic, Molecular, & Optical

Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics involves the study of structures of atoms and molecules and investigates interactions of matter mainly using electromagnetic fields such as lasers. At Binghamton, students have the opportunity to study nonlinear optics in condensed matter and intense light-plasma interactions using ultrafast lasers.

Professors working in this field are:

  • J. Jang: optical and electronic properties of semiconductors, excitonic matter, and nonlinear optical responses of polymers

  • B. Shim: nonlinear interactions with matter using high-power, ultrashort laser pulses.
