Burch steps down, Strehle to serve as interim GSE dean

Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Donald Nieman announces that Beth Burch has stepped down as dean of the Graduate School of Education, effective Jan. 13, to complete a major research project on Jewish American women writers. She will be on leave during the spring semester. Susan Strehle will serve as interim dean through Aug. 31, 2017, and will continue to serve as vice provost and dean of the Graduate School.

“I want to thank Beth for providing strong leadership for GSE during the past 16 months,” said Nieman. “She positioned GSE for future success by reorganizing the dean’s office staff, placing the school’s budget on a firm foundation, completing work on the proposal for a TESOL program, laying the groundwork for masters curricula designed to be more attractive to prospective students and reversing the enrollment declines of recent years.

Strehle is familiar with GSE, having served as interim dean in 2007-2008. She is also an accomplished scholar who has worked closely with scores of graduate students, understands what is necessary to create strong, vibrant graduate programs, and understands how SUNY and State Ed work.
