Binghamton University, SUNY Broome Community College and Promise Zone Community Schools SUNY Grant

As part of SUNY’s Investment and Performance Fund Awards, Binghamton University received a grant to provide higher education access and support services to help local residents and current students finish their degrees. The program we created, Broome County HEARS (Higher Education Access, Retention and Success), has several components.

Retention: Our student success coaches will work with students who are one semester from graduating, but have been out of school for a few years, to complete their degree. These students will take classes at Binghamton, online or at their local SUNY to complete their bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University or their associate degree from SUNY Broome.

Access: We will work with the Promise Zone Community Schools program to identify and coach community members who would like to pursue higher education. We will set up several learning labs throughout the Broome County to facilitate this process of higher education accessibility.

Success: We will facilitate successful outcomes for re-enrolled students by conducting needs assessments and connecting these students with appropriate campus resources (advising, financial aid, tutoring, etc.). We will also offer mentoring and other assistance to help the students be successful.
