Kelli Smith began her duties as the director of the Steven Fleishman ‘91 and Judith Garzynski Fleishman ‘90 Center for Career and Professional Development Monday, June 2.

Smith comes to Binghamton from her position as assistant director of career services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Nebraska Wesleyan University, a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University-Bloomington and a doctorate in human sciences/leadership studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“With 20 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, Kelli is well-positioned to take Binghamton University’s career services operations to the next level,” said Brian Rose, vice president for student affairs.

“It is an honor and privilege to be a part of one of the great universities in America,” said Smith. “There are so many exciting things happening here, and I am humbled by both the responsibility and opportunities that lie ahead. I hope to move the department forward in a way that serves Binghamton students and alumni to its fullest potential and serves as a national model for career services at a premier public institution.”

Prior to her position at the University of Nebraska, where she also taught leadership courses as an adjunct faculty member, Smith was a career consultant for Georgetown University’s MBNA Career Education Center. She also served as director of Greek life and special assistant to the vice president for student affairs while at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

She has presented at numerous conferences on topics including transforming career services and shaping the future of the career services profession, and has also published several articles on strategic directions for career services and preparing students for transition to after-college life.
