Summer Send-offs welcome newest members of Binghamton family

The campus is buzzing as the newest members of the Binghamton University community — the Class of 2018 — have joined returning students for the start of a new academic year. The Alumni Association and Dean of Students Office sponsored a number of late summer events on and off campus to help incoming freshmen feel like part of the Binghamton University community.

Summer Send-off events took place at a variety of locations within the Metro New York area, on campus at Binghamton, in Buffalo and Washington, D.C. Alumni attended each gathering – in fact, some events were hosted by alumni at their homes – and shared their experiences and perspectives with new students.

Danielle Furey Britton ‘06, MA ‘08, co-chair of the Alumni Association’s Greater Binghamton Chapter, spoke to students at the event held in the University Union on Aug. 5.

“We have nearly 15,000 graduates in the Binghamton area, and this means there are ample opportunities to network with alumni either on campus or very close by,” Britton said.

President Harvey Stenger also attended the event and reinforced Britton’s comments, telling the students that they will receive a world-class education at Binghamton but that education will come with some inevitable challenges. He said the students will encounter stormy weather, which drew laughter from the crowd because a boom of thunder happened during his remarks.

“The Binghamton community is here for you,” Stenger said. “Don’t be shy about reaching out to alumni for guidance.”
