In the Media
For two years in a row, 2012 and 2013, Binghamton University students won a national video contest to provide additional support for local nonprofit organizations. The contest was funded by the Learning by Giving Foundation, the primary funder for student philanthropy at Binghamton University. The Learning by Giving Foundation funds and promotes experiential philanthropy to encourage the development of future philanthropic leaders.
In 2012, the first time the Learning by Giving Foundation held the competition, the students told the story of Mom's House, a Greater Binghamton-based nonprofit whose mission is to provide free child care to enable mothers to pursue their education. The winning video earned $10,000 for Mom's House. The video was produced by Allie Hall, Raimi Ade Salu, Katelyn Lavrich and Kevin Hallagan. The video can be seen here: 2012 Winning Video.
In 2013, students chose to make a video for the UHS Foundation after becoming familiar with the organization and its work in the 2012 Philanthropy in Civil Society Course, through which they gave $4,000 to support the program's initiatives. In the video submission, Binghamton University students focused on the degree of need demonstrated by the UHS program and the impact that an additional $10,000 would have in expanding the program. The 3-minute video helped the students showcase their knowledge, values, and decision-making skills while also advocating for a worthy non-profit. The video can be seen here: 2013 Winning Video. The students involved who created the 2013 video were Lauren Colantonio, Rachel Engle, Allie Hall, Jenn Solomon and Tim Tschurjumov.
