Technology Transfer and Innovation
Binghamton University’s NYS Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP) performs high-impact basic and applied research to support the technical translation of economically significant innovations from electronics systems integration, flexible electronics, thin film solar power, energy management for electronic systems, new materials and sensors, and modeling, analysis and characterization, to national industry sectors. S3IP is a critical participant in advancing these technologies and in training with industrial partners, the essential educated work force.
S3IP is committed to technology transfer and commercialization with a proven model focused on direct interaction between Center affiliated faculty and staff, and member company scientists and engineers. This is institutionalized through Center memberships, which provide a unique opportunity to share in leading edge electronics manufacturing R&D. S3IP also provides access to advanced diagnostics infrastructure for start up, small, medium and large companies to aid them in their technology roadmap goals. S3IP’s opening of the first prototype line in the nation dedicated to research on large area flexible electronics, housed at one of the Center’s partner companies, serves as an example of the innovative partnership models developed by Binghamton University where faculty, industrial engineers and graduate research students generate new fundamental knowledge that can quickly become translated to industry product development.
S3IP works closely with industry, and its research has generated over $700M in economic impact in New York State over the past decade.
