Welcome to the SSIE Department at Binghamton University and I thank you for your interest in the Department.
We live in a complex society, but in the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering, we are doing our best to make it less complicated.
In fact, that's exactly what we do -- we study complex systems and look for simplifying solutions. We work across all environments and fields of study including manufacturing, management, service industries, healthcare systems, and others. So, our time could be spent at a hospital developing ways to decrease wait times in emergency rooms, or you might find us in a manufacturing facility working on quality assurance issues or consulting at amusement parks, and beyond.
At the undergraduate level, we offer a BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering. We are proud to inform you that this degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
At the master's and doctoral levels, we have two programs: one in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and the second in Systems Science (SS). Those pursuing master's degrees also have the option to choose a concentration in Health Systems or a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree with a concentration in Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering.
A health systems concentration is available in both MS programs. It is geared for professional or leadership roles in healthcare areas including hospital operations management, health systems engineering, bio-technology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, health information technology, consulting and health policy.
We also offer the 4+1 program for qualified undergraduates, which allows them to complete requirements toward an MS either in SS or ISE in a relatively short period of time. A similar program is in place for an advanced degree from the School of Management.
The Department is very active in research. We are very closely aligned with the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), which is an internationally renowned, multi-faceted, customer-focused organization that assists industry in a cost-competitive manner while currently enhancing competitiveness in industry. Our faculty and primarily graduate students are brought together with federal and industry sponsors to conduct innovative industry-based research. Many students take advantage of our graduate distance learning program (EngiNet) to continue their education while being involved in WISE.

The mission of the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering is:
1. to educate students at the undergraduate and graduate levels of systems science, industrial engineering and systems engineering,
2. to advance the state of scientific and technical knowledge through basic and applied research,
3. to provide technical support for the economic development of the state of New York, and
4. to provide service to the university, the public, and the professional community.
