The Binghamton University Theatre Department offers courses and degree programs for a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and a combined Theatre BA/Masters in Public Administration program. Undergraduates concentrate in one of the following three areas: Acting/Directing, Dance, or Design and Technical Theatre. Graduate students (MA program) can concentrate on Directing, Theory, Performance, or Technical Production and Design; however MA students are not required to choose a concentration. Students of the combined BA/MPA program should declare their interest as early as possible, preferably in their freshman or sophomore year. A Theatre Minor is also available.
The ultimate outcome of theatre education is to enable students to observe, illuminate, and effectively communicate through the medium of theatrical art, fundamental truths about the broad spectra of human experience. The goals of an education in Theatre at Binghamton are:
Knowledge of the evolution of theatrical art and its resulting modern form, including texts, physical production and performance from ancient to modern times.
Learning from Production
Understanding of the importance of a common objective, effective communication, presentation skills, deadline, adherence, the role of personal responsibility and interdependence in a collaborative milieu, and the balance of artistic vision with practical necessity in the pursuit of creative outcomes for all component fields within theater.
