Plan Snapshot

The NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program recognizes SUNY's unique role as a catalyst for job creation, research and as educators of the state's next-generation workforce. Binghamton has responded to the challenge by proposing an ambitious agenda that includes construction of a state-of-the-art Smart Energy Research and Development Facility and expansion of enrollment by 2,000 students.

Binghamton's plan leverages the University's academic excellence, cutting-edge research and economic development initiatives to jump-start a new era of powerful and productive returns to the local community and New York state

  • Construction of a state-of-the-art Smart Energy Research and Development Facility at the Innovative Technologies Complex
    • The new building will fuel research, teaching and entrepreneurial activity in energy-related fields such as solar energy and fuel cell technologies, energy storage methods and improved efficiencies in computer and other electronic systems.
  • Increased enrollment of 2,000 students
    • Binghamton University receives more than 32,000 freshman and transfer applications annually, but can only admit 3,200 students each year. Our facilities are primed for growth. New residential halls under construction will lead to an additional 1,100 student beds available in fall 2013. A new Engineering and Science building opened this fall to accommodate faculty research, and capital funds from the challenge grant program will support renovations and expansion of existing classroom space.
  • Strengthened partnerships and collaborations with local industries and businesses
    • Binghamton University's partnerships are a key source of economic strength and vitality in the region, particularly in the technology field of electronics system design and integration. The support we receive through the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant will enable an expansion of these partnerships through new research, new academic programs and new outreach efforts.

Expected Benefits:

  • Economic catalyst
    • Under the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant plan, Binghamton University's economic impact will increase $77.5 million annually. The University's overall annual economic impact on New York state will reach $1 billion by 2017.
  • Job creation
    • The challenge grant will create more than 840 jobs in Broome and Tioga counties, including 385 new faculty and staff positions and 252 construction-related jobs annually for every year of construction.
  • Increased tax revenues
    • The additional students and employees will generate more than $6 million in annual property taxes for local municipalities, thereby increasing the tax base without increasing the tax burden on individual taxpayers.
  • Green energy leadership
    • The challenge grant will help solidify the Southern Tier and New York state as a leader in green energy research and development. The Smart Energy Initiative will bring together University research and industry expertise to generate new knowledge, create new businesses and attract entrepreneurs in one of the most promising areas for economic growth.
  • Social and economic vitality
    • The addition of 2,000 new students and 385 new faculty and staff members will have a significant social, cultural and economic impact on the Southern Tier. They will live, work and recreate, contributing their time — and their spending — to the social vitality and economic health of the region. The area will see new development in response to the growing student population, with new housing, restaurants and entertainment venues for our students.
