Urge legislators to pass SUNY reform

Dear Think Tank advocates,

On May 11, SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, SUNY Board of Trustees Chair Carl Hayden, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein and Gov. David A. Paterson held a press conference urging the Senate and Assembly to pass the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act (PHEEIA). They were joined by SUNY students, faculty representatives, administrators, and business and labor leaders.

The governor emphasized the need to eliminate unnecessary and burdensome regulations SUNY must abide by in contracting, procurement, land use and other areas. "SUNY and CUNY are in many ways obfuscated and unable to provide the services that they can, and what this whole Empowerment and Innovation Act is about is liberating them, giving them the opportunity to provide the resources to their students so that we can become a part of global industries and a new global economy," Paterson said.

The PHEEIA, Paterson stated, "will provide SUNY and CUNY with the freedom and flexibility they need to prepare students for the future, create jobs and promote economic development. My proposal would help SUNY and CUNY reach their full potential and drive development both on campus and off. This reform is supported by students, the faculty, labor and university administrators alike, and we urge the legislature to take swift action to pass this important bill."

Right now, it is important that legislators understand the significant impact the PHEEIA will have on Binghamton University and the other SUNY University Centers. If you have not done so already, please take a moment to send a message to targeted decision-makers, urging them to pass this legislation in support of all four University Centers.
