A Message from Interim President C. Peter Magrath

As 2010 comes to a close, let me thank you for your help in supporting Binghamton University this past year. Thanks in part to the almost 10,000 messages sent to legislators by our advocates, reform of the legislation governing public higher education passed the Senate and is sure to be a priority on the Assembly and Senate's legislative calendars again this year. We learned a lot during the past year's legislative efforts and still firmly believe in the broader goals of what the empowerment legislation was trying to achieve. These principles are good for New York and good for SUNY.

Over the next few months, Binghamton University and SUNY will be working together on the 2011-12 Budget Request. We will make a compelling case that further cuts will be detrimental to students and the long-term vitality of the state. An important part of our strategy will be to educate the newly elected governor and legislators about Binghamton University's significant contributions to the state and the nation. And we have plenty to tell them -- from our national reputation for academic excellence and educational value as noted in publications such as U.S. News & World Report, the Fiske Guide to Colleges and the Princeton Review, to the broad array of faculty research, business partnerships, and critical work of Binghamton alumni in engineering, nursing, teaching, and in the legal and financial sectors. As you well know, Binghamton University's impact is diverse and large.

Undoubtedly, 2011 will bring new opportunities and challenges but with your continued support, we will secure the legislation, tools and resources needed to build on Binghamton University's excellence in research, teaching and service and expand student access to high-quality, low-cost higher education. The next six months will be critical in making our voices heard in Albany. I know that together we can continue to make inroads in establishing Binghamton University as one of the best public universities in the nation. We will keep you informed as we make progress with our advocacy agenda.

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of Binghamton University. I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year.

C. Peter Magrath
