
Women comprise 14 percent of the students at the Watson School and 11 percent of the engineering workforce in the United States. To support and encourage women at the Watson School, a new committee has formed to create networking opportunities with women engineers in the Binghamton area and beyond.
United Press International (UPI) reported that a new $35 million solar energy research center will team with five New York universities to solve solar-power technology issues. The Solar Energy Consortium, of Kingston, N. Y., will collaborate with Binghamton University, Clarkson University, Cornell University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the State University of New York at New Platz in a partnership that will foster New York's solar industry and help save the planet from global warming.
Josh Kay, a 22 year-old bioengineering student at BU who plans to attend law school next year, was appointed to the newly formed Young Leaders Congress by former NYS First Lady Silda Spitzer to help deal with the problem of young New Yorkers moving out of state. Kay is a leader of a student think tank known as CIC 20/20 - Catalyst for Intellectual Capital focused on keeping the university's graduates in the Binghamton area by the year 2020 by making the city a premier destination for young adults. Watson school students (undergraduate and graduate programs are offered) may unleash their curiosity in six academic arenas: engineering design ,computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, systems science and industrial engineering, and bioengineering.
