Meet Sofia Stirpe ’25

Hometown: Shoreham, NY
Majors: Integrative neuroscience and English

Sofia lives in Newing College, one of Binghamton’s six residential communities. Newing is made up of four buildings, each with corridor-style living.

There are many places to grab breakfast. Today, Sofia walks over to Dunkin’ Donuts for a caffeine fix.

10 a.m. -  Lecture Hall

The Lecture Hall has 14 high-tech classrooms and is also a hot spot for a number of extracurricular activities and a place to host a variety of guest speakers. Sofia’s 10 a.m. class of the day is organic chemistry.

Innovation Lab / Bartle Library

The Innovation Lab is one of Binghamton’s newest study centers located in the Glenn G. Bartle Library. It features study rooms, moveable furniture to facilitate collaboration, 3D printers and more high-end technology.

1 p.m. - Hinman Dining Hall

The newly renovated Hinman Dining Center is located in the residential community called Hinman College. You’ll find nutritional, well-balanced meals with a diverse range of create-your-own meal options! Sofia was craving sweet potato fries.

2 p.m. - Science 4

Binghamton’s Science 4 is home to the Psychology Department. Inside you’ll find modern lab and research facilities, classrooms and student spaces. Sofia has a weekly meeting here with her neuroimmunology lab research group.

4 p.m. - C4/ in the Broome closet

The Broome Closet, located in the Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center (C4) and shared between Newing College and Dickinson College, is a music practice room for student use. Sofia loves to practice her oboe here, just steps away from her room.

5 p.m. -  Nature Preserve

Binghamton’s Nature Preserve encompasses 190 acres of land that includes a 20-acre wetland. Our Nature Preserve is home to an amazing array of species and numerous hiking trails. It’s also Binghamton’s largest lab! Sofia’s class, Mapping the Soundscapes, takes place in the Nature Preserve. Here she is experimenting with shotgun, binaural and hydrophone microphones to capture the sounds of chirping birds and beaver families.

8 p.m. - Ballroom dancing

There are 450+ student clubs and organizations where students build new skills, explore new ideas and forge new friendships.

Sofia is a member of the Ballroom Dancing Club. Here she is practicing in the hallways of the Fine Arts Building with her dance partner.

9 p.m. - Lifelong friends are made at Binghamton

Binghamton’s residential communities feature common rooms on each floor and different social events for students to hang out and get to know one another. Sofia likes to end her day playing cards in her room with friends.
